FILIPINO
...is the basis of the national language of the Philippines and one of the two media of instruction in Philippine schools. It is the lingua franca of the Filipinos in America. Filipino is the language to learn if one intends to do research in the Philippines or communicate with most Filipinos. At the University of Hawaii at Manoa, four levels of Filipino, two courses on Filipino for educators, two courses on Filipino literature, four courses taught in English (such as Philippine Language and Culture), Philippine literature and folklore, and Filipino grammar are offered by the Department of Hawaiian and Indo-Pacific Languages and Literatures. It is probably the only American university that offers a heavy concentration on Philippine language and literature studies.
