How to Hire an Intern?
To hire an intern is as easy as 123. Here's what you do:
-
Registering with the Schools of Communication, UHM
by filling out the Internship Site Request
Form online or you can print out the form and fax it to (808)
956-5591.
-
Develop a job description for the potential intern
position(s).
-
Students will call and set up an interview with
you. You conduct interviews at your own convenience and you make
the final decision regarding hiring.
Things to consider for why hiring an intern:
-
Internships can provide motivated student employees.
Students who plan to work as interns must enroll in COM 495 Communication
Internships course, which awards 1 to 3 credits optionally. When
there is grade involved and credits are at stake, students are most
likely to be motivated to perform their best.
-
Internships can be either paid or unpaid. Please
consider your state labor laws, your company policy, and also the
benefits to the students when making this decision.
-
Internship typically need to fall into a "semester
or term" for a student. This means Fall semester (normally
starts at the middle of August), Spring semester (starts
at the beginning of January) or Summer session (starts
at the middle of May). Since students are required to initiate
searching for their internships before formally register for the
internship course, I would suggest that you file the request form
at least two weeks before the end of each semester. Remember, good
students are always taken fast.
