    "In-Point" Puts its Spotlight
    on Two Recent Graduates

    By: Ryan Kawamoto

    Mike Jocson, jocson@hawaii.edu
Mike Jocson has been active in SVFA for over a year. He served as last year's Awards Ceremony Program Technical Director. This year Mike served not only as Production Coordinator, but also as the House Technical Director. Big "M" (a nickname given to him by his buddies) slept overnight in "haunted" Kennedy Theatre to guard equipment set up for this year's Awards Ceremony.

Some of Mike's more recent personal productions include "Party Pooper," a drunk driving PSA and "From the K-9 Files: Roscoe," which was an Animation/Experimental finalist in the 6th Annual Awards Ceremony and 3rd place winner in the Ocular Carnival, sponsored by Borders Books & Music Store.

He is no stranger to the professional ranks of film and video in Hawai'i. He interned on an Alper Film commercial for Lockheed-Martin and volunteered as a production assistant for "Tradewinds: The Lemon Tree Billards House," a new local television show produced by Dana Hankins and directed by Tim Savage.

Mike Jocson graduated in May 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication and looking to start his career in the film and video industry. He someday hopes to work in the Hawai'i industry as a director.

    Jason Nishimura, jnishimura@starrtech.com
Jason Nishimura, more affectionally known as "Master Controller," served as the ITV Coordinator for this year's Awards Ceremony. Jason was responsible for arranging the transmission and live broadcast of the ceremony through the Office of Information and Technology Services here at UH. Jason was also able to obtain four cellular phones with unlimited air time donated to the crew for a week, as well as eight Motorola walkie-talkies.

It was a Jason's diligence and dedication to the production of the Awards Ceremony that earned him a Lokomaika'i / "Patty" Award. The award is named in honor of Patricia Amaral Buskirk, SVFA's volunteer advisor, and is given to three students for their outstanding efforts in the production of the Annual Awards Ceremony.

Jason was brought into SVFA last year for the 5th Annual Awards Ceremony as a "clutch" crew member to handle tape playback. He also worked on the Communication 431 production of "Ad It Again," a 30-minute original sitcom. On that production, he served as a lighting director, technical director, assistant producer, and talent (not all at the same time though). He was also an intern and later a volunteer at the Department of Communication's Media Lab.

For his Senior Thesis, Jason did a documentary on distance learning and the Hawai'i Interactive Television System while working at KCC Educational Media Center, facilitating HITS classes and designing multimedia and web pages.

Like Mike Jocson, Jason graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication and hopes to someday work in the local video and film industry. He plans to continue designing multimedia projects and is also looking forward to beginning his career.

ALUMNI UPDATE: Jason currently works as the Assistant to the Broadcast Producer at Starr Seigle McCombs Advertising, one of Hawaii's top advertising agencies. He is also continuing with his multimedia interests at StarrTech Interactive, a division of Starr Seigle McCombs Advertising.
