    SVFA Collaborates with the
    Pacific Institute for New Media

    By: Lori J. Chun

Many SVFA members have been busy this summer including the few who had the opportunity to volunteer their services at the workshops held by the Pacific Institute for New Media. Housed at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa Summer Session, 1996 marks the eleventh year that these workshops have been opened to the public.

A total of twenty workshops ranging in topics from computer game design to non-linear editing to screenwriting were held this summer between July 8 - August 3, 1996. Working with Pacific New Media Director, Susan Horowitz, members Celia Calvo, Wendy Yale, Tracy Uehara, Jon Nakagawa, Lisa Miyamoto, Darrell Takara, and Lori Chun volunteered to assist with administrative duties in the various classes. In exchange, SVFA members were allowed to participate in the workshop. Classes were taught by various both local and mainland professionals in the film, video and new media industries including Film and Video Association of Hawai'i (FAVAH) President, Dennis Christianson, Sam McMillan of Vivid Publishing, Jane DeKoven of Macromedia, and Academy Award winning documentarian, Deborah Shaffer.

Formerly known as FAVSI (Film and Video Summer Institute), the Pacific Institute for New Media or Pacific New Media for short, decided on a name change in order to "reflect our future direction . . . [which includes] expanding into the exploding realm of digital media." Not only has Pacific New Media called for the expansion of topics covered, but also the fact that workshops and talks will now be offered throughout the year with the possibility of college credit being offered through the UHM Department of Communication.

SVFA hopes to continue to provide support for such innovative and progressive programs like the Pacific Institute for New Media.
