To obtain more detailed information regarding the production of UH Magazine or the UH Magazine Underwriting Program, contact Executive Producer, Jules Nathan. Q: What is UH Magazine?
UH Magazine is a 30-minute, monthly variety television program entirely produced by students which is cablecasted via ‘Olelo: The Corporation for Community Programming on Oceanic Cable channel 52 (OAHU). Created in 1985 by Patricia Amaral Buskirk and Sue LaChance Porter, UH Magazine is one of the vehicles used by SVFA to allow its members to obtain hands-on skills in television production in both the managerial and technical areas with equipment provided by SVFA.

Pieces aired on UH Magazine cover a wide range of topics and utilizing varied production styles. Student produced segments may fall within the following general categories:

  • NON-DRAMATIC: Any non-fictional material such as documentaries, interview / news, sports, special events, etc.
  • DRAMATIC: Any fictional material that has been staged.
  • PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS (PSA): Segments made on behalf of a non-profit organization that deals with public interest and awareness.
  • EXPERIMENTAL: Stretching the limitations of media in new and creative ways.
  • ANIMATION: Computer generated, stop motion, or cell animation.
  • MUSIC VIDEOS: Traditional music videos which can be better recorded live or dramatic story line videos with original or copyrighted music that legal releases have been obtained for.
  • Q: How does it apply to me as a student member of SVFA?
Student members of SVFA are encouraged to create new segments according to their interests, ability and availability of time on the show. By participating in the production of segments for SVFA including UH Magazine, that student becomes eligible to exercise all the rights and privleges of active membership.

UH Magazine is a great opportunity to reach into the community with a different opinion as to what the University of Hawai‘i is all about. SVFA welcomes new ideas and new producers in hopes that UH Magazine will continue to grow in the years to come.

Q: What do I have to do to get a production on air?
Any member with an idea that they wish to produce, should first consult with the Executive Producer and/or appropriate Associate Producer(s) who will then advise on the best way to proceed. At the very minimum, members must first submit a Treatment describing the production. This Treatment should include an objective, individual plans for the execution of the production, a basic scene outline and/or storyboard, and when at all possible, a script.

Student Producers should consult with the Executive Producer on other more specific technical requirements and the process in which an Edit Master is prepared for final submission. The overall production of UH Magazine is supervised by the Executive Producer who prepares the final tape for broadcast.

Q: Does UH Magazine have any production guidelines?
Yes. In addition to your Treatment, you will also need to fill out a "Production Proposal and Equipment Reservation Form." You can obtain this form by doing one of the following:

  • Stop by the SVFA office in Campus Center #312 on Monday - Friday between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM to pick up a Proposal/Reservation form.
  • Download the Proposal/Reservation form in Microsoft Word RTF (Rich Text Format).
  • Download and print out the Proposal/Reservation form as a web form. (Sorry, no electronic submission of forms available.)

Other than these specific guidelines, members are encouraged to experiment with creativity to produce new segments according to their interests and to consult with the Executive Producer and Associate Producers for further assistance.

  • Associate Producers

Associate Producers that volunteer to help in the production of UH Magazine are appointed by the Executive Producer to provide you with more guidance (if needed) in your productions. They also assist in the management of UH Magazine production teams which include News, PSA, Dramatics, Sports, Comedy and Music Video.
