UH Magazine Treatment Guidelines (Rev.01.27.97)
For ENG Productions (Electronic News Gathering)
ie: news, campus events, sports, documentary, general non-fiction

Requirements: one page minimum, typewritten, double-spaced, 12pt. font
* See Executive Producer for consultation and assistance.

Paragraph 1: Introduction

  1. Title of production
  2. Name of Producer
  3. Program type (news, sports, campus events, drama, music video, etc.)
  4. Approximate length of finished piece
  5. Target audience (college students, high school students, etc.)
  6. Purpose of production (to entertain, to inform, to instruct)
  7. Approximate date of completion
Paragraph 2: Narrative
  1. Brief outline or synopsis of story or event
  2. Story focus / angle
    a. What events and issues will be covered?
    b. What is the impact of this story on the viewers?
  3. Who will be interviewed?
  4. How do you plan to cover the story? What is your plan of attack?
Paragraph 3: Budget Considerations
  1. Source of funding
    * You must specify budget if funding is from an outside organization.
  2. Tape Stock Breakdown
  3. Acquisition (raw footage) - Hi8 format
  4. Editing/Post-Production - 3/4" U-Matic format
Paragraph 4: Master Schedule
  1. Production dates and times.
  2. Approximate hours of production (shoot) time
  3. Major equipment needed (camera, tripod, lights)
  4. Locations of shoots. Be specific.
  5. Post-Production
  6. How many hours of editing required?
    * General industry standard: 1 hour of post per 1 minute of edited video.
  7. What kind of editing?
    a. cuts-only
    b. A/B Roll (dissolves, wipes, fades)
  8. Special Effects
    a. CG's - computer generated titles
    b. Chroma Key - blue screen (like the weathercasters)
    c. other
