The Awards Ceremony has been discontinued.
In April 1989, then Lieutenant Governor Ben Cayetano addressed the audience about the importance of the Awards Ceremony and its role in developing Hawaii's film and video industry. Since 1989, Ben Cayetano has been elected and now serves as the Governor of the State of Hawai'i. Now more than ever, together, we must see through to accomplishing what has been started. - Q: What is the SVFA Awards Ceremony?
-
A part of SVFA's Mission Statement inlcudes providing students with exposure in terms of showcasing their works through a venue that reaches a wide audience and interaction with industry professionals. As an annual event hosted and producted entirely by members of SVFA, the Awards Ceremony recognizes the outstanding achievements of Hawaii's student video and filmmakers in a statewide competition at both the high school and college level.
Modeled after the Academy Awards, the Awards Ceremony is itself a means through which SVFA members can gain valuable hands-on experience in organizing and producing a major event as well as collaborating with industry professionals. By far, it is the largest student film and video competition held in the State of Hawai'i. (Download 1.4MB QuickTime)
- Q: Who can submit entries for the competition?
-
As a competition to recognize local student talent in film, video, and multimedia production, the competition is open to all Hawai'i-enrolled high school and college students. Due to the fact that the annual production of the Awards Ceremony is continually being challenged, SVFA is unable to accept entries from elementary students for competition. Perhaps in the future, SVFA will receive the support to help support others.
- Q: How can I benefit from participating in the Awards Ceremony?
-
There are countless testimonies from students who have gained from participation in the Annual SVFA Awards Ceremony as either (or both) an entrant or as a production crew member. Through the live broadcast and re-broadcasts of the gala event, students gain statewide exposure for their productions. More important than the recognition factor of receiving an award, students reaching the final phase of judging receive personal critique on their productions from top professionals in the film and video industry. Such helpful comments support the students' continued growth in the craft. Other students have received internship and/or job offers and not to mention invaluable industry contacts through their active participation in this event.
7th Annual SVFA Awards Ceremony
"Mirai ni Mukete no Bijon...Visions of the Future, Vision for the Future."
Building upon the rejuvenation of spirit and vitality in SVFA, and its new motto of "the Future starts Today," the vision behind the theme tries to capture the hopes of SVFA for its own future, as well as the future of the film and video industry here in Hawai'i.
Visions of the Future: SVFA would not exist if not for the visions of students in the past who sought a way to have their ideas and voices heard through the medium of film and video. SVFA will not exist in the future without the visions of students in the state of Hawai'i.
Vision for the Future: SVFA is taking a new tack in activism in the industry. The vision referred to here is one of an industry that is self sufficient and supports the island economy, as well as creating a viable market for the skills of future video and film makers.

6th Annual SVFA Awards Ceremony
Each day, we, the youth of Hawai'i, are faced with an uncertain future as the state finds itself at an economic crossroad. Through the 6th Annual Awards Ceremony, the student members of SVFA make a declaration, a call for unity and support for the development of the film, video, and new media industries: "Lokahi I Ho'okahi Mana'o -- Let's Join Together In One Vision!"
The vision realized for the 1996 Awards Ceremony was fashioned in support of Hawaii's homegrown production "artists" in order that we might be able to share the true spirit of Hawai'i with the world through film, video, and new media productions. It was a call, broadcasted live statewide, to government officials, industry professionals, educators, the public, and most importantly to future video and filmmakers to unite in our efforts to build a better future with a clean industry that provides a wide variety of professional employment and an opportunity to share through the communicative arts.

"Viva La Imagen! Celebration of Images"
The theme tries to encourage and support Hawaii's future video and filmmakers' to be free in making their own creative images and voices without interference from other forces. It gives the diverse ethnic backgrounds of our members and the community an opportunity to share their visions and voices with the world.
