ICS
141:
Discrete
Mathematics ! Registered Students: Read the
information on this website.
Send an email to the TA Lisa Miller,
acknowledging that you
have read and understood the information below.
This is required. The
deadline is 1/14/2014.
You can not take the course without doing this. Keep in mind that
if you want to drop the course, you should do this during the first
week. This course is done online. It
uses a WIKI
for all class discussions. It
uses Laulima only for some tests (this depends on how reliable Laulima
is this semester; if it is bad, we will post the tests on hte WIKI
instead). Check this website frequently for
updates. Textbook: Discrete Mathematics and
its Applications, Kenneth H . Rosen INSTRUCTIONS: (all of this is mandatory - you can't
take the class without following these instructions)
First, look at the syllabus and the book, to decide if this is
the
right
course for you.
Keep in mind that
if you want to drop the course without receiving a W, you have to do
this during the first
week.
Make yourself familiar with laulima (this may take a while).
To get set up with the WIKI, choose an anonymous avatar name for
yourself, that ONLY you know, and send an email to the TA Lisa Miller
requesting
that username. Sign in,
change the temporary password, and get started.
You must respect the instructions for adding questions/comments.
Contact the TA with IT questions about the WIKI.
Participation
in
homework
is
mandatory.
YOU CAN NOT SKIP ANY HOMEWORK, UNLESS YOU HAVE A
SICK NOTE OR EQUIVALENT. You can not pass the course without
completing each homework assignment. NO EXCEPTIONS.
You are required to type
homework assignments in LaTeX. If you are not yet familiar with it, you
should make yourself familiar with it now.
The homework is due every Week
by the end of the week, and has to be submitted
to the TA electronically. If you can not submit it
electronically,
please contact the TA Lisa Miller.
Homework can be found on
the

The main class discussion is asynchronous. The following work
flow will help you
to succeed in this course! You can, of course, work faster-but not
slower. Each week, do the following:
Monday - Look at the
lecture slides. Write down your questions while you do
that. Enter your questions into the Wiki. Look at other students'
questions. Answer them if you can. You
get
credit for correctly answering your peers questions.
Tuesday - Read the
relevant chapters in the book. Write down your questions while
you do
that. Enter your questions into the Wiki. Look at your peer's
questions. Answer them if you can. You get
credit for correctly answering your peers questions.
Until Wednesday, at noon (this is a hard deadline) all your questions have to be entered into
the WIKI. The earlier you enter them, the more discussion you
can create, and the more credit
students can get for answering them.
Thursday - Look through
the questions of your peers and the answers from the instructor. Add
comments and other questions. Do the
homework.Participation in
homework is mandatory! YOU CAN NOT SKIP ANY HOMEWORK, UNLESS YOU HAVE A
SICK NOTE OR EQUIVALENT. You can not move on in the course without
completing each homework.
Friday - Recital, during
which the old homework (previous week) is
discussed, and additional excercises are provided. Please do NOT use
this recital for anything else but this purpose. The class discussion
happens in WIKI (online), not in the recital. The recital
is not mandatory, but usually helpful.
You have until Sunday night to submit your new homework. Note,
however, that you can not expect feedback from the instructor and TA
during the weekend. Homework is
formatted in LaTex and submitted by email to the TA. The deadline is
Sunday midnight. This is
a hard deadline. Your homework will be graded in the order in which it
is received.

(Note: the Final exam may be proctored and may require your physical
presence. If you are unable to appear in person to the exam, or if you
have any other issues with this, please email me your concerns before
1/17/2014. Make sure to use the following subject line (exactly): 141
Final--problem.)
Grading: Final grade is
composed of: Final Exam (50+n)%; Midterm (10+m)%; Homework p%. You get
to choose (n,m,p). Constraints: 0 < (n,m) < 40; 0 < p < 40.
Email your choice to Lisa Miller by 1/17/2014 (no later). You can not
change your choice after that date. If we do not receive your email by
this date, the default will be n=40, m=p=0 (I would say this would
result inthe best overall grades, given my experience from previous
semesters).
The Final Exam covers the entire semester. The difficulty level
and
structure of the midterm and final will be similar, however the final
will be longer than the midterm. Participation in homework is
mandatory. Experience shows that students who do well in the
homework, also do well in the course, while students who do poorly in
the homework tend to fail the course. Make sure to check your homework scores
frequently and keep track
of how well you are doing! Your midterm grades are equally indicative!
You can use Laulima's Gradebook for
that. Grade Scale (fixed):

A
87.5
B
75
C
62.5
D
