HISTORY OF MATERIAL CULTURE 
From the 1450 C.E. to the Contemporary Period

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course illustrates the significance of cultural artifacts in recording the development and aspirations of societies in the world's major cultural regions, from the 15th century CE until the contemporary period. It examines how the geographic uniqueness and the distinct cultures of Europe, the Americas and Asia, have contributed to the diversity of material culture. It will provide an overview of major developments in pre-modern, modern and post-modern art, design & architecture.

CLASS NOTES
Students are responsible for preparing their own class notes. Due to the extensive material covered in this course, at the beginning of each lecture, the instructors will give an outline of art works, key concepts and terminology discussed in that lecture. REQUIRED READING (available for purchase at the AUS Bookstore):
Marilyn Stokstad, ART A Brief History, Prentice-Hall, 2000
Students must purchase the textbook and read the assigned pages from the required textbook, before each lecture (see DES122 Schedule). There will be multiple Pop-Up Quizzes during the entire summer session that will ascertain that students are keeping up with their required readings.

CODE OF CONDUCT & ATTENDANCE
Students must attend ALL classes, be punctual and adhere to the University’s Code of Conduct as outlined in the Student Handbook. More than 4 Absences will result in an automatic reduction in the final grade.

EVALUATION CRITERIA 
ALL Tests  50% (see attached Lecture Schedule for test dates)
Assignment 1: Gallery Critique  15%  (see attached Guidelines)
Assignment 2: Masterpiece Paper 15% (see attached Guidelines) 
ALL Pop-Up Quizzes 10% (Based on Assigned Readings)
Class Participation 10%
