PAGING & CIRCULATION POLICY

In order to preserve these valuable collections for present and future use, materials in Special Collections are housed in closed stacks, and are available upon request. Special Collections has its own circulation counter and hours, and many services vary from the general Library circulation procedures.

Who may use the collections?

Anyone with a photo ID may use the collections. Use the following to determine what form of identification you need to bring with you.

UHM faculty, staff and students Current activated UHM ID card
UHM night school students Current UHM fee slip and a photo ID
UH System faculty and students

UH ID card

(Bring a photo ID if your UH ID card does not have a photo.)

East West Center program participants

East West Center card

(Bring a photo ID if your EWC card does not have a photo.)

Non-UH affiliated users holding the following Library borrower's cards:

Community

Research Organization/Corporation card holders

Associate Membership card holders

Hawaii State/City card holders

(Materials may only be used in the Special Collections reading room.)

Photo ID

All bags must be stored in lockers

Bags, backpacks, briefcases, etc. are not allowed in the Special Collections reading room. Coin operated lockers are available. Bring a quarter to use lockers (you will get your quarter back when finished).


Paging (requesting) materials from closed stacks

Materials in Special Collections are housed in closed stacks, and are available upon request. Anyone may page and use materials in our collections. Online paging is now available.


Borrowing materials

Selected materials may circulate for loans of 7 days with proper Library authorized IDs. See a reference librarian or circulation counter attendant to determine which materials may circulate.


Renewing materials

Materials may be renewed at the Special Collections circulation counter, or online via Hawaiÿi Voyager.

Renewals will not be accepted via telephone, fax or e-mail.


Returning materials

Materials should be returned to the Special Collections circulation counter during the hours that the Collection is open. When the Collection is closed materials may be returned to the first floor exit gate monitor or the book drops.


Fine Policy

Selected materials may circulate for loans of 7 days with proper Library authorized IDs. To facilitate the prompt return of library materials, fines will be assessed at the following rate:

  • $.50 per day per item (including holidays and weekends)
  • There is no grace period.
  • When the maximum overdue fine reaches $10, the item is considered lost. Then an additional processing fee of $3 is assessed (for a total of $13) PLUS the cost of replacing the material. The cost of the material is determined by the call number.
