PUBLISHED SONGBOOKS

Project to index Hawaiian songs
in published Hawaiian songbooks
________________________

compiled by Amy K. Stillman
December 1988

PREFACE

This index is primarily an aid to locate Hawaiian songs in published Hawaiian songbooks. A Hawaiian song is defined here as a song in Hawaiian on any subject, or a song in English with Hawai'i or some aspect of Hawaiian culture as a theme. A Hawaiian songbook is one in which a majority of the contents are Hawaiian songs. The songbooks indexed are published songbooks as well as informal compilations that have been cataloged into library collections.

Songbooks were located in the following libraries:

HAWAII

MASSACHUSSETTS

NEW YORK

RHODE ISLAND

WASHINGTON, D.C.

AUSTRALIA

NEW ZEALAND

Hawaiian songbooks fall into three major types:

  1. those that are primarily collections of Hawaiian songs,
  2. instruction books for 'ukulele and guitar, and
  3. children's books.

I. Checklist of Published Hawaiian Songbooks

This is a listing of the published songbooks in which Hawaiian songs have been indexed. Within each section, citations are arranged alphabetically by compiler (or publisher, in cases in which no compiler is identified). Multiple publications by one compiler are arranged chronologically by date of publication. Each publication is given a sigla consisting of the compiler's last name and the date of publication.

II. Lists of Contents of Published Songbooks

The contents of Hawaiian songbooks are itemized. Songbooks are identified by their sigla given in the Checklist.

NOTE: The lists of contents of published songbooks are available only in the print version of this Index which is located in the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Hamilton Library Hawaiian Collection, at call number: HAWN ML3560 .H3 S753 1988. A Supplement to this Index is also available in print, at call number: HAWN ML3560 .H3 S753 1988 Suppl..

III. Index of Hawaiian Songs

This represents work in progress, and as such is incomplete and unedited. Some non-Hawaiian songs included in Hawaiian songbooks have not been deleted from this listing. Cross references of the same song appearing with different titles (e.g. "Pupu Ao Ewa", "Pupu O Ewa" and "Pearly Shells") have not yet been worked out.

The spelling of Hawaiian-language titles and first lines had to be standardized in order to be properly sorted by computer. For this reason diacritical markings are not used, and spellings may not reflect their appearance in the original source. This page represents only a part of the comprehensive database of Hawaiian songs. The finalized version will include information on composers, text language, song form (i.e. himeni-type, hula or hapa-haole), and number of verses.

Note: A text-only presentation of the database of Hawaiian songs is under construction on the web at URL: http://www2.hawaii.edu/~speccoll/chants/Songdbf.htm.
