A Few Local Words
- Ola
-
- In Hawaiian, this means "Life." People say this when someone sneezes in the same way you would say "Bless You."
- Punchy Moke
-
- Stereotypical "Braddas" who hang out at the beach all day and beat up people they don't like. Many times they can be people with attitude problems, people with nothing to do, or people who feel the need to prove themselves to their friends. Best avoided, Punchy Mokes give local people a bad name. Not to be confused with the "Cousins of Mass Destruction." (See: Andy Bumatai)
- False Cracks
- Punchy Moke's Fist. Best avoided also.
- Sacred Heiaus
- Special temples built by ancient Hawaiians. These sites hold a lot of spirituality for the people of Hawaii. Foreigners have a habit of disrespecting these sites. Never step on or piss on a Heiau. Seriously, what is wrong with people these days. Would I piss on your church?
- Da Kine
- Mysterious word once believed to mean "everything." Yet, it always is specifically only one thing (or person). Da Kine is one of those unsolved mysteries of Hawaii.
- Obake Files
- Ghost Stories of Hawaii. Written in the Chicken Skin series by Glen Grant, these are peoples accounts of actual evens they claim happened to them. I highly recommend this book. Even if you are a non-believer, you will be surprised at the places you find that are very close to home. Then you will learn what "Chicken Skin" really is.
- Musubi
- One of the most delicious treats in the world judged harshly by non-eaters because it includes Spam (also harshly misjudged). You can take the Spam out of you like and replace it with a yummy UME (red plum seed) in the middle. Mmmm! Hungry just thinking about it! Judge not the Spam! Spam is a great and yummy thing! It's not much worse than hamburgers and fries and it replaces lost electrolytes. (See: The Spam Cookbook)
It also comes in a low sodium form. Spam! YUM! Musubi, the greatest!
- Poi Dog/Mix Plate
-
- A person who is of lots of different ethnicities. I am a Poi Dog.
