A directed study is an excellent form of learning about a particular area of psychology and acquiring research experience.  Through directed studies students can explore the topics of interest to them that are not covered in regular courses or deepen their knowledge of a specific issue through supervised research.  Research experience is an important part of training in psychology regardless of whether one is preparing for a research career or not.  Understanding research is necessary in order to
be able to utilize progressively sophisticated and continuously updated professional information.  Participating in research is an important factor of admission to graduate school and an essential component of graduate study.  If you feel that you might be interested in psychological research, please take a look at my research interests and current projects and publications and conference presentations.  If what I do looks appealing to you, then let's do research together!  Please send me an e-mail or stop by to discuss a prospective project.

Since I started teaching at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, I have supervised over 80 directed studies.  Most of my students were highly satisfied with their experience and many continued working on their projects for 2, 3, and even 4 semesters in a row.  The vast majority of students completed high quality projects, the results of which were presented at major professional conferences.  More importantly, the students learned advanced professional skills, which helped them with obtaining desirable jobs or continuing their education in graduate school.  Students are always welcome to discuss the possibility of working with me: I supervise directed studies every semester.
