Semester Experience

On-Site Training: After committing
to the program, college students are trained so they are able
to tutor elderly students more efficiently. After attending
an orientation on-campus, students will train at their respective
worksites before they begin tutoring. The student is required
to tutor two-hours each week for the duration of the program
(with the exception
of Summer Session 2--see above). Although
class requirements may vary, students also have to write a
weekly journal and a final reflection paper.

|
Tutoring Sessions: The
college student will help elders improve their reading, writing
and communication skills as well as prepare them for their
naturalization examination. Materials for studying English
as a second language and the naturalization exam will be provided
at each site. However, participants are asked to contribute
to each session with their initiative and creativity.

Reflection Workshop:
Midway through the program*,
participants are required to participate in a reflection workshop
where they discuss their experiences and prepare to write
their final paper. The reflection workshop gives participants
an opportunity to hear from their fellow tutors and may assist
in the writing of the final paper.
(*Summer
Sessions: the Reflection Workshop is scheduled at the end
of the program.)
For more
details regarding the content of your final paper please
talk to your professor or campus coordinator.
