Hannah’s Phonemic Record: Day 1
Date: 3/29/01
Age: 11;24
Time: 9:45- 10:45 a.m. and 5:00- 5:30 p.m.
Setting: Family’s house in Japan. After breakfast and before dinner. TV on. Hannah and me only. English and Japanese spoken.
Phonemes Observed:

Notes:
Not recorded. Most all of her utterances occurred as she pointed and looked at objects. Most productive when looking at plants. Her speech was unsolicited. Only two noticeable words. Babbling sounded like English.


Hannah’s Phonemic Record: Day 2

Time: 11:00- 11:30 a.m. and 5:00- 5:30 p.m.
Setting: Family’s house in Japan. Before lunch and evening after dinner. TV on. Hannah, Akiko (mother), Okaasan (grandmother), and me. English and Japanese spoken.

Not recorded. Most utterances occurred around the living room table while playing with her toys. Her speech was unsolicited. Only one noticeable word. Babbling sounded like mixture of English and Japanese.

Then after dinner, eating dessert; playing around the living room table; TV on; Hannah, Akiko, Okaasan, Ryouhei (uncle), Masami (auntie), and me; mostly Japanese and some English spoken.

Not recorded. Very excited while folding clothes and playing with dolls. Later, very productive while playing with Ryouhei and Masami. Babbling sounded like mixture of English and Japanese.

Then before dinner; drinking tea and eating cake; right after playing outside; Hannah, Akiko, Okaasan, Masami, and me; mostly Japanese and some English spoken.

Not recorded. Very excited and productive while Okaasan was vacuuming and later while she was eating cake. Babbling sounded like mixture of English and Japanese.

Not recorded. Most productive while playing with carpet cleaner. On train, very few utterances. Babbling sounded more like English today; lots of different consonant clusters.

Later at around 8 p.m. after dinner; playing around dinner table; Japanese TV on; Hannah, Akiko, Dan (roommate), and me; mostly Japanese and some English spoken.

In afternoon at around 3:30 p.m. after nap; eating crackers and drinking water; Japanese nursery rhymes on stereo; Hannah, Akiko, and me; English spoken and Japanese spoken and sung. Later at around 7:30 p.m. before dinner; Akiko cooking, Hannah playing with car-walker, me observing and talking; Japanese TV on; English and Japanese spoken. Again at around 9:30 p.m. right after bath; changing clothes; Akiko, Hannah, and me; English and Japanese spoken.

Some observances recorded. Lots of consonant clusters today. Not a very productive day. Seemed tired (jet lag?). Most productive in evening while playing with car walker. Babbling sounded like mixture of English and Japanese.

Again at around 5:30 p.m.; Hannah playing around the house and watching English TV, Akiko taking shower, and me home from work for short break; English spoken only.

Later at 7:00 p.m. when Dan came home; Hannah playing with toys in living room, Akiko cooking, me playing with Hannah; Japanese TV on; mostly Japanese and some English spoken. Again around 9:00 p.m. during Hannah’s bath; Akiko bathing Hannah and me in the bath playing with Hannah; English and Japanese spoken.

Again at around 10:30 p.m. in the bedroom; Akiko trying to get Hannah to sleep but Hannah playing on the bed and running around room; me on the computer; English news on TV; mostly English and some Japanese spoken.
