Study Problems
Asuka, Takahito, Yukari
A, Y: Aloha!
A: Welcome to ESOL 197 internet news station. I am Asuka.
Y: And I am Yukari. How are you doing today?
A: Fine, thanks. How about you?
Y: Good. Today, we are going to talk about…
A: Study problems. So, Yukari, you have already surveyed this topic, haven’t you?
Y: Yes.
A: Could you tell us the result?
Y: Sure. According to our survey, most of international student have some study problems. Please look at this graph. We surveyed 35 international students. As you see, 90% of international students have study problems, and only 10% of them do not have any study problems
A: Wow! It’s a large difference of percentage. There are many students who have study problems. I was surprised.
Y: Yeah, and I found that it is difficult for them to solve their problems. We will talk about it and show more detail later.
A: Sounds good. Do you know whether they study by themselves or with their friends?
Y: Yes, in our survey, most of international students said that they usually study by themselves, but some students study with their friends.
A: I see. By the way, where is Taka?
Y: Now he is in the library. I think that he has just finished interviewing. Hey, Taka! What is going on? Could you tell us what you found out?
T: Hi, I am Taka. I am in the library now. I have just finished my interview. I was surprised that there were many international students who have some study problems. Then, I will explain what kind of problems they have. I found that most problems come from their English skills. Their first language is not English, so it is difficult for them to write, read, listen, and speak in English. What do you think about that, Yukari?
Y: That’s interesting because I have the same problems.
A: Me, too. I am not good at writing. What is next, Taka?
T: I also asked their study style. Some people said that they wanted to study by themselves. This is because they can concentrate. Some people said that they wanted to study with their friends because they can share their idea and help each other. In my opinion, I would better to study with friends. However, some people would better to study by themselves. So, this result was very interesting to me. Which do you prefer to study alone rather than to study with your friends, Asuka?
A: Well, I would like to study alone, because I can manage my time. How about Yukari?
Y: I like to study by myself, but I think that it is important to share the idea with friends and help each other. What else did you find out, Taka?
T: Now, I am in the cafeteria. I found out good information. I am going to tell you about how to solve these problems. According to the interview, the best way is to ask the teacher. I agree with this opinion because I could not solve problem by myself. But some people said that the best way is just to read books. I think this way is also good. Ok, that’s all for my report. Thank you. Back to the studio.
A: Thank you Taka. So, what do you think about these results, Yukari?
Y: Well, there are many ideas that I agree with. And I felt relieved because I found that many international students have the same problems as me.
A: So do I. I am always worried about English. So, I am happy to know many solutions. Then, whenever I have some questions, I usually ask my teachers. How about you, Yukari?
Y: Well, I do not usually ask my teachers, but I ask my friends. If I ask my friends, I exchange information and get new knowledge. However, I think that it is also important for us to ask teacher because we can understand more clearly.
A: That’s right! And I also think that it is important for every student to speak up in class. They should not hesitate to ask question.
Y: I see. The worst thing is to leave your problems. I think that it is caused by misunderstanding.
A: If you do not have enough confident to speak up, first it is necessary for you to be used to English. Therefore, you should make native friends and talk with them a lot.
Y: That’s a good idea! I will try it. These problems might be difficult to solve, but it is important to work hard.
A: Right! If you would not give up, and your problem can be solved.
Y: I hope so. It’s time to finish our news. Thank you for listening. This has been Yukari.
A: And this has been Asuka. Today’s field reporter was Taka. Thank you Taka. Have a nice day!
A, Y: Bye.
