Radio Story 5:

Financial Aid at KCC

Tony Li (T) - Lisha Yin (L)

Aloha! Welcome to ESOL 92 Program News.

T : My name is Tony. Here is my partner, Lisha. Hi, Lisha!

L : Hi, Tony! Hi, everybody! I’m Lisha. How are you doing, Today?

T : I’m great. Today we will talk about our project of Financial Aid, right?

L : Yes, Tony! Because some of immigrant students have a problem which they can not afford the expensive tuitions. They have to pay something else. For example, they have to pay house payment, car loan, phone bills, etc. After that, they don’t have extra money for school. So, Tony and I were working on a research report about Financial Aid. We made a survey and the results is that: 20 students, only one has Financial Aid.

T : Why is that?

L : Because some students don’t know they can apply Financial Aid at KCC and don’t know how and where they can get it; the other reason is they will  replace to continue their studying at another states. These results are from interviews. Tony, can you tell us more about the interviews?

T : Sure! I interviewed two immigrant students: Oswald Jim is a Micronesian. He has been here for 8 months and studied at KCC for two semesters. He doesn’t have Financial Aid because he will go to New York City to continue his studying when he gets a degree at KCC. But, he likes to get Financial Aid and choose grant; the other student’s name is MaYuMi. She is a Japanese girl. She has come to Hawaii for one year and four months. She also doesn’t have Financial Aid, but she heared that at Honda International Center. She is interested to apply a Financial Aid and select a grant. Now she is trying to contact the College Service Office.

L : That is great! I interviewed a Chinese immigrant student. His name is Kevin Li. He is from Hong Kong. He has been here more than 5 years and studied two years at KCC, but he had dropped off because he had three jobs at that time. He really had a hard time. But, he came back in the Spring semester 2005 because he has a Financial Aid when he heared some information from his friends. He thinks Financial Aid helps him a lot. He doesn’t have to work as much as before and be able to spent more time to study. He is really happy for it.

T : That very good! How did he get it? Is that hard to apply?

L : Well. I only know a little bit of information . When you almost finish high school, at the last month, the School Service Center will help you to get financial Aid. But, you have to register a status at Selection Service Center before you do anything. If you have finished high school at other part of the U.S., you must contact your high school office and hand in a transcription form. This is only one portion of application of Financial Aid. Also, I am sure you can get information from KCC on line.

T : In the survey and interviews, most of the immigrant students like to get Financial Aid, right?

L : Yeah, that’s true and I hope every immigrant students who need helping their expensive tuitions can get Financial Aid to make their life easier.

T : Good job, Lisha.

L : Thanks, Tony you too and I hope everybody have a great time to study at KCC.

T : Thank you for your paytion everyone. Hope you enjoy it!

T&L : Have a good day! Bye~~
