The History of Micronesian Immigration to the U.S.

by Marson Binios

Actually my topic is the history of Micronesia to the United States. Micronesia is a constitutional government in the Free Association with the United States. Micronesia is located in the Pacific Ocean, northwest of Papua New Guinea. In Micronesia there are hundreds of small islands , divided in to seven territories: Palau, Pohnpei, Chuuk, Yap, Marshall Islands, the Northern Marianas, and Guam. In 1947 the agreement betwen the FSM and the United Nations was approved, that FSM would become a Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. This Trust Territory of the Pacific Islandswas form by the United nation and supported by the United States. In 1979, four of the islands agreed to become independent: Chuuk, Pohnpei, Yap, Kosrae.  this happen after they signed an agreement on may 10,1984.

One thing I want to share is the importance of the Free Association. Micronesians could never immigrate, because of poor economic and lack of resources. The only resources they have is fishing and farming. The landscape is large and the toatal land area is only 271 square miles, mostly mountainous islands of volcanic and raised island atolls. After a few weeks of the agreements were approved a wave of Micronesians began to leave their homelands. Especially, young single man began crossing the ocean.

The reason why many Micronesians left their homelands is to find higher educations and find great jobs. Many Micronesians are looking forward to what they are going to do in the future. They started to moved to Palau first, then the Marshall Islands and the Commonwealth of the Marianas. Within three weeks later many Micronesians started to go to Guam and the CNMI and later to Hawaii and the US for the purpose of their future as well as their families.

After they immigrate to the US they were developing their families and their islands. They also have different habits and changed of their skin color. Also, they join the US army and becoming a part of the USA. In addition, Micronesians can raise their voice in any issue that is against them.

In conclusion, Micronesian Islands are very useful for military base. Although, people are  immigrating to the US, but their Islands marks as an important source for the benefit of American people. However, Micronesian people were also benefited from the welfare of American people.
