KCC ESOL Program

Masa Maruyama (M) - Mayumi Ueno (U)

BOTH: Hello!! We are ESOL NEWS.

M: Hello! How are you doing everyone! I’m MASA.

U: Hello! How are you doing everyone! I’m Mayumi. Today, we are going to talk about ESOL program.

M: We talked about ESOL with Guy Kellogg, he is an ESOL coordinator, and we asked some questions to him.

U: He explain about ESOL and answered our questions really kindly. He praised our questions, right?

M: Yeah, absolutely! He answered our questions were really nice. I was surprised when I heard about that. Didn’t you think so?

U: Yes, I also surprised and I was glad to hear that.

M: Yeah, I agree. Anyway, what was your first question?

U: My first question was “what’s the class number mean?” Like 197, 92, 94 and 100. Those numbers are not in order, right?

M: Yes, that’s right.

U: So, I wondered. Do you know 100 mean is the first grade. So, a freshman of native speaker will take course from this number, 100. However, we are not native speaker, right?

M: Yes, exactly.

U: Therefore, we have to take 92, 94 which mean before the 100.

M: Oh, I see. How about 197?

U: As you know, ESOL 197 is non credit program, KCC has no number to give us, so 197 is experimental number at KCC.

M: So. You mean, we are students of English experiment?

U: Yes, something likes that. Guy called this class bridge class? We are doing prepare for college to enter, right?

M: Oh, I see, that’s interesting word, bridge! It’s like; we are getting across to the college! It sounds nice. By the way, how about your next question?

U: I have an idea about ESOL curriculum. We are learning Reading and Writing now, these are requirements. Many international students have problems, such as pronunciation, grammar or conversation. ESOL sets up these classes in optional, that’s my idea and asked Guy, Is that
possible or not?

M: That’s a good idea, Mayumi!! And, what was his comment?

U: He said “It’s possible plan.”

M: Really?

U: Yes. If we will help to set up these classes, this may happen soon, and our name will remain forever as great people at KCC!! A-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.

M: Yeah, It sounds good!! Let’s help to do this right away!

U: Sure! Let’s do it! Oh, we are going to have a quiz in Shawn’s class?. We have to study before do it.

M: Oh my god!! I forgot it.

U: A-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha, anyway, How about your questions, Masa?

M: Do you know who created ESOL class?

U: Yes, I do. The answer is Frank Noji. He made it! But why he made it?

M: OK. I can explain about it! First, the class was originary morning class, and students have learned about Civil Rights. This is because, if the students took credit classes, they would find many differences between ESOL and credit class. The credit classes have civil rights than the ESOL class.

U: And, he thought this is the best for KCC and international students, right?

M: Yes.

U: By the way, why the ESOL 197 is non credit class?

M: Because, the ESOL 197 is for international students. For example, credit class is 50 minutes for 1 credit. However, the ESOL class is 100 minutes for 1 credit. Do you know why?

U: I don’t know. Why?

M: Because, the international students must be a full-time student. Because of the F-1 visa. International students cannot be a part-time student.

U: Now I understand. Could you explain about teaching style?

M: OK! First, KCC gives text books to teachers. Second, the teachers think about how to teach to students. And finally, the teachers teach to students. This is the teaching style.

U: I see. Thank you, MASA! So, we have been talking about ESOL, right?

M: Yeah! That’s right!

U: You’ve got it guys?

Both: See you next time! Have a nice day!! ALOHA.
