Culture Shock
by Tomo Tanaka
KCC has many international students. Asking about culture
shock to international students. Almost all students said, YES I
have. There is different culture between home country and America.
Student A;
When I came to Hawaii. I went to the bathroom. I was surprised because the door
is very short. We can see somebody inside. My hometown we cannot see somebody
inside. We just can check the door lock, which has red and blue marks that mean
somebody is using or not. That is very different from my country.
Student B;
When I went to a restaurant I was disappointed, because many restaurants have
a Japanese menu. I know many Japanese tourists come to Hawaii. But this is America.
Student C;
I have some American friends. They told me that dating of American style. If
a guy invite me for dinner, and then I go to dinner with that guy. That means,
I like you or I can go out with you. When I heard that I was very
surprised, so we cannot make friends easily and have to be careful to make friends.
It is different from my home country.
Student D;
When I came to Hawaii I was surprised that many American people are very friendly
and kind, especially neighbors. And also guys are very nice to ladies. It is
very nice!! I compared to my hometown. We do not care about other people. If
we do not know who they are, we do not say anything. However many American people
say Hi. They are kind of my culture shock.
These are some culture shock stories. That is different culture. It is good to learn about other countries.
