Ongoing research into the history and archaeology of four whalers sunk in April 1865

In April 1865 the CSS Shenandoah, a Confederate raider operating in the Pacific and Arctic Oceans, arrived at Pohnpei to search for American whalers. In Pohnahtik, Lohd Pah harbor, the Shenandoah captured four whaling ships: the Edward Carey, the Harvest, the Hector and the Pearl. The crew of the Shenandoah burned the four ships and left Pohnpei to search for whalers in the Arctic Ocean.

The research conducted to date indicates three of the four ships are still evident within the harbor. Burning and the deterioration of 140+ years have reduced the cultural material to sections of the lower hull and pieces of the tyrworks on one ship. The location of the sites in the harbor are not optimal for diving: low visibility and a large amount of fire coral make it difficult to navigate around the area.

In addition to the wreck sites, there are also the remains of two stone constructions: a small pier built to attract traders near the turn of the 20th century and a bridge built in the 1930s as part of the original circle island road and which has now deteriorated and no longer crosses the entire river.
