The purpose of this chapter is to describe in detail the components of a system unit, a case containing electronic components used to process data.  Processors, motherboards, expansion slots, ports, adapter cards, and memory are explained as well as illustrated.  Upon completing this chapter, readers can enjoy a general basic understanding of the composition of system units.  Some find the discussion of hardware monotonous, one reason this chapter may not be enjoyable for its audience.  One thing which I have learned is the machine cycle.  This concept is integral to the knowledge of how processors are designed and implemented.  Understanding the composition of a system unit serves as a foundation which provides relevance to further studies in the computer sciences.
