Mating
Mating has been observed in Hawaii only in the Spring and Summer on remote islands that aren't inhabited by humans. If there are humans present, there is no mating so this behavior hasn't been observed on the main Hawaiian Islands. This species is polygamous which means that they mate with more than one partner. They also mate in the sea. A phenomenon called "mobbing" occurs when males try to mate with many females and they attack other males in doing so. Females are sexually mature at six and after that, they go on to have up to one pup a year after a gestation period of about one year. A majority of the females, 60%, give birth every year.
