The Group's Glossary

This webpage sometimes makes use of some rather unusual or obscure terms. The abbreviations in particular can get confusing. In an attempt to clarify, here are explanations of some of the more critical ones.

If you would like any other terms defined, please notify Julia or Elisabeth.

AD&D
Stands for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, a popular roleplaying system. It's pretty great, but it has some weaknesses. When our DMs get tired of its limitations, they experiment with other roleplaying systems and have even developed some of their own.

DM
Dungeon Master. He or she controls the environment, the events, and the basic direction of the game. It may sound like an all-powerful position, but it's actually pretty easy for a DM's plans to get totally tossed aside through the whims of a PC who is especially determined. Just ask Julia, the DM for the Ferret Adventure.

Facet
The planet on which most of our adventures take place. Facet is described by its inventor, Joel, as looking like a 20-sided die. Each facet on Facet is unique in its array of landforms, wildlife, and civilizations. The facets are separated by tremendous rifts that can be crossed only by the bravest, strongest, and luckiest of characters.

Hengeyokai
A creature native to Kara-Tur that can shape-shift from the form of a humanoid to that of a specific animal. For example, Ryukiu Shenokuseku is a one-legged hengeyokai albatross in the adventures of Madge, Q, and Squeak.

Kara-Tur
A continent in the AD&D world that hosts a variety of East Asian inspired cultures.

MPS
Take a guess. "Mad Purple Stegosaurus?" Good try...

PC
Player Character, meaning anyone playing other than the DM.

Race
In the conventional AD&D system, PCs are allowed to choose from six races: human, elf, half-elf, gnome, dwarf, and halfling. Our extra-creative DMs have allowed us (the PCs) a diversity of additional races, including hengeyokai, changeling, wemmick, vampire, and several even stranger ones. We even played an adventure (very briefly) where we were allowed to create our own races!

Sylvania
The continent on which most adventures take place in AD&D. The land is dominated by forest, as suggested by the name. Sylvania's general culture is modeled on that of medieval to Renaissance Europe. All the conventional AD&D races reside there.
