ANNOTATIONS

GENERAL WORKS

Rubin, Judith Aron. Art Therapy: An Introduction. Philadelphia, PA: Brunner/Mazel, 1999. [RC489 .A7 R834 1999]

An excellent source that provides readers with a basic understanding of Art Therapy. Filled with illustrations, it describes the evolution of art therapy. Although intended for use by practitioners and educators, its limited use of jargon makes it useful for the layperson as well. Topics covered include: defining art therapy, its history, education and practice, therapeutic approaches and techniques, assessment, populations served, where it is practiced, professional standards and ethics, and its future. A references section listing professional associations, journals, books and audio-visual materials on art therapy and related subjects is also provided.

APPROACHES

Kaplan, Frances. Art, Science, and Art Therapy: Repainting the Picture. London: Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2000. [RC489 .A7 K36 2000]

A useful source that proposes a scientific approach to art therapy. It describes the value of research and scientific inquiry toward understanding art creation and its interpretation. An appendix with recommendations for integrating science into art therapy training and practice is also provided. Includes references and indexes.

Rubin, Judith Aron. Approaches to Art Therapy: Theory & Technique, 2d ed. Philadelphia, PA: Brunner-Routledge, 2001. [RC489 .A7 A67 2001]

Another excellent source that describes how various approaches to psychotherapy are applied in art therapy. Divided into five sections, each section focuses on a different psychological orientation. The theoretical approaches discussed include: Psychodynamic (Freudian and Jungian), Humanistic, Psycho-Educational, Systemic, and Integrative. Although it is fairly easy reading, it is probably most useful for individuals with some background knowledge of psychological theory. Includes illustrations of artwork and an index.

ART THERAPY PRACTICE

Campbell, Jean, Marian Liebmann, Frederica Brooks, Jenny Jones, and Cathy Ward. Art Therapy, Race and Culture. London: Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 1999. [RC489 .A7 A7 1999]

A useful source that examines the impact of racial perceptions and cultural differences in art therapy practice. It is a collection of writings describing how practicing art therapists approach working with diverse and multicultural groups and individuals. Includes illustrations of artwork, a bibliography, subject and author indexes, and brief descriptions of the contributors.

Fausek, Diane. A Practical Guide to Art Therapy. New York: Haworth Press, 1997. [RC489 .A7 F38 1997]

Provides information on various therapeutic art activities that can be adapted for various populations with different levels of physical and cognitive abilities. Although intended for use with geriatric clients, the techniques and adaptations provided are also appropriate for other populations with similar disabilities or handicapping conditions. The art modalities discussed include: fabric, paint, clay, collage and miscellaneous. Supply suggestions for materials used in the art activities are presented in the appendix. Illustrations of artwork and an index are also included.

Malchiodi, Cathy A. Medical Art Therapy with Children. London: Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 1999. [RJ505 .A7 M44 1999]

A useful source that provides information on choosing an art activity to achieve a particular goal when working with children in various medical settings. It is a collection of case studies describing current research and practical approaches for using medical art therapy with children. Topics include: eating disorders, cancer patients, asthma, HIV/AIDS, burn victims, and child arthritis. Includes references, a resource section, and name and subject indexes.

SCHOLARSHIP AND RESEARCH

AATA. "Official Web Site of the American Art Therapy Association," AATA Online. Home page on-line. Available from http://www.arttherapy.org/; Internet; accessed 3 April 2002.

This online source provides links to information about the AATA and other resources related to art therapy. The most useful aspect of this site is its link to a journal index for Art Therapy, the AATA's official professional journal. The index is available in PDF format and includes every edition of the journal, from 1983 to the present.

Case, Caroline and Tessa Dalley. Working with Children in Art Therapy. London: Tavistock/Routledge, 1990. [RJ505 .A7 W67 1990]

This is a compilation of works from art therapists working within the areas of health, social services and education. Topics included: child communication development (art versus language), interpreting children's unusual drawings, illness behavior, intestinal motility problems, child sexual abuse, and art therapy in a multi-cultural school. Name and subject indexes were also included.

Hanes, Kathleen Mileski. Art Therapy and Group Work: An Annotated Bibliography. Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, 1982. [REF RC489 .A7 H36 1982]

Published in 1982, this source may still provide useful information for individuals interested in learning about art therapy theory and its approaches. Chapter topics proceed from general to specific with citations arranged alphabetically by author. Two appendices with contact information for educational programs in art therapy and art therapy associations are provided. Indexes for name, subject and journals cited were also included.
