The Umu
For Thanksgiving, the PPC has a tradition of making an umu (imu, heima'a, hangi, lovo, mumu, underground oven, etc. - you pick your favorite word) in the back of Hale Manoa. Here are pictures taken from Thanksgiving '98. But before we view the pix, a word from the umu man.
.....
the Umu man aka William Wigmore
Sorry, I guess he had nothing to say. Now on to the umu pictures.
First we heat up the rocks... Then ask Arnold to bring some grass for coverage. Then comes the banana stumps.
Then we evenly lay them out on the heated rocks and wait for the food to be brought.
Well, now that the umu is ready for the food, let's see how the girls are doing with the preparation.
Now that the food is here, we can put them in the umu and cover it up, lead the way Umu man!
Paki: This is how we do it...

The banana leaves go on top first, then the cover.
Finally, we cover the umu with dirt and relax. Tony: OK, my turn now with the shovel.
OK! The umu is on its way. Let's take a break!

Ta-Da! Behold! The food!
Now that the food is ready it is PARTY TIME!
