FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE CORNER OFFICE--by Judith H. Dobrzynski

If the stock market has been looking like Aesop's hare the last few years, the real economy -- of cars and computers, health care and consulting -- has surely been the tortoise, advancing steadily though slowly. But the next 12 months, chief executives around the country say, may turn out to be the year the tortoise has its revenge. Not that anyone expects the economy to pick up its pace. Its outlook is simply surer than the stock market's.

LePage's Inc., a 121-year-old manufacturer of adhesive products such as transparent tape, filed the federal lawsuit this month against the Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing Co. (known as 3M) for predatory pricing tactics. LePage's claims 3M has monopolized the tape market, unfairly hindering competition. Peter Hearn, a Philadelphia lawyer who is co-counsel for LePage's, said the case was filed in Philadelphia because the waiting period for federal court cases in Western Pennsylvania is about two years, about twice as long as in Philadelphia.

STICKING WITH STRATEGY--by Derek Slater 1996

At 3M's Maplewood, Minn., headquarters, a road sign for the information superhighway points directly to Jim Radford's office. As manager of interactive customer communications and 3M's webmaster, Radford--who has a certificate commemorating the company's "First Internet Order" prominently framed above his gargantuan monitor--fires up his Web browser and logs into The Innovation Network, www.mmm.com. First he surfs through the flamboyantly graphical "3M Buf-Puf Products: The Teen Web zine for Health and Beauty" (sample articles: "Meet the Guys Who Eat Buf-Puf Sponges" and "Quiz: RU a Grrl, Geek or Groupie?"). Then, returning to the home page, he clicks into a buttoned-down set of pages describing 3M's new MP8030 Multimedia Projector. Beyond giving Radford a quick way to show off 3M's wildly diverse product lines, the company's Web site represents just one way 3M is delving into electronic commerce (EC) to serve its equally diverse customer base.

At 3M, cross-pollination between divisions is encouraged. Technical councils let scientists from the various branches of the company come together. 'I've had other divisions literally create research programs to try to help me solve a problem that I've been wrestling with,' says Alex Cirillo Jr., technical director for 3M's Commercial Graphics Division. In addition, the company holds internal trade shows where groups can show off their new products - and get suggestions from other 3Mers on how to improve or otherwise modify a product to make it better.

3M's STAFFING STRATEGY PROMOTES PRODUCTIVITY AND PRIDE-- by Dawn Anfuso (no date
given)

In response to staffing challenges a decade ago, 3M created programs that remain strategic today. As I interviewed people at Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co., I noticed that my sources all expressed a similar sentiment, that they're proud of being 3Mers. Sure, when interviewed most people try to portray their companies in a positive light. But in this case the expressions were much more personal. Take, for instance, this comment from Kathleen Stanislawski, staffing manager: "I'm a 27-year 3Mer because, quite frankly, there's no reason to leave. I've had great opportunities to do different jobs and to grow a career. It's just a great company." Tom Vaaler, HR director for the Life Sciences sector and marketing, also proudly proclaims: "I started here the day after I graduated from college and I've been here 32 years now."

3M History-1900
1902 held bright promise for five businessmen in Two Harbors, Minnesota. They started Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (3M) to mine what they thought was corundum, a mineral ideal for making sandpaper and grinding wheels. The mineral, however, turned out to be a low-grade anorthosite. Sales of the poor-quality mineral were weak, and the company nearly failed -- but its founders persisted.

Dear Mr Fletcher:
Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company ("3M")has for many years used the trademark POST-IT in connection with various paper and adhesive products. The POST-IT mark has come to identify the products of 3M, and our company now enjoys valuable goodwill attached to that mark. That goodwill is important to 3M, and it is also important that the company not permit the use of a mark by others which is likely to cause confusion as to sponsorship or affiliation with 3M. In addition to 3M's extensive common-law rights in the mark POST-IT, 3M has obtained a number of federal trademark registrations for that mark.
