After graduating with an A.B. in economics from Stanford University, I worked eight years as branch office manager for Household Finance Corporation in northern California. I enrolled at the University of California at Berkeley during the Free Speech Movement 1960s and came to the University of Hawaii in 1967, still five years short of finishing the PhD in economics. Since then I have served as department chair, senior fellow at the East West Center, and have published in journals such as the Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Finance, and Review of Economics and Statistics. During my Spring 1996 sabbatical, I became totally devoted to the Internet. My favorite Web browser is lynx.
