Trumpetfish (Aulostomidae)

trumpetfish.jpg (21797 bytes)Trumpetfish are part of the order Syngnathiformes, which includes cornetfish, snipefish, shrimpfish, ghost pipefish, pipefish, and seahorses. The Aulostomids consist of the single genus, Aulostomus, and its 3 species are sometimes confused with the related cornetfish family. The bodies of these fish are long and compressed with a tubular snout that is capable of stretching when sucking in prey. Trumpetfish are agile predators that sometimes accompany schools of surgeonfish to take advantage of the smaller reef organisms that are disrupted by the group's feeding. Trumpetfish, or Nunu, live in shallow water and are eaten broiled or dried, sometimes using ti-leaf wrappings.
