Fourspot Butterflyfish                         fourspot butterflyfish.jpg (25229 bytes)With few exceptions, the 22 species of butterflyfish that decorate Hawaii’s waters with their bright colors and vibrant movement are known generally by two Hawaiian names: kikakapu (kika-energetic; kapu-prohibited) and kapuhili. They are distinguished morphologically by their short, compressed bodies, ornate butterflyfish.jpg (30691 bytes) small mouth, and small, smooth scales. Most of the species are habitually shallow-water reef fish, and carnivorously feed on coral polyps, coelenterates, filamentous algae, polychaete worms, and zooplankton. Most of the time, individual fish appear unaccompanied, although spectacular assemblies sometimes occur. Generally, these fish are not sought after by fisherman.
