Notes:
Information theory recognizes that there can be no information without a medium of representation. The information in a message is not a separate kind of stuff from the medium, rather it is an arrangement of the medium that transmits messages. Information approach escapes from the problems of substance dualism by showing how one can talk about such abstract ideas as concepts and knowledge in a mathematically rigorous thoroughly materialistic way.
The first attempt at an information-based psychology --information processing theory--did away with substance dualism, but maintained the commitment to the importance of language-like processes as the essence of intelligence.
