Errata for the first edition
Changes to the Acknowledgements
“Gerry Mero” should be “Genny Mero”
“Jiminez” should be “Jimenez”
“Jorges” should be “Jorge”
add: “Scott Daniels, Kathy Fox, Kevin Fox, Rosalinda Taylor, Katie Fox, Sam Fox, Jennifer Eck, Patricia Shields, Brien Hallet,”
Changes to the main text
“Hawai’i” should be “Hawai‘i” throughout (specifically back cover, the bottom of the first page of the acknowledgements, and page 238 in the index) -- the apostrophe should be an okina
“Hawai‘ian” should be “Hawaiian” on the back cover (and if it occurs elsewhere). There is no okina in the word Hawaiian, only in the word Hawai‘i.
page 17: “describing the second voyage, attributed to John Rickman” should read “describing the third voyage, attributed to John Rickman” - “third” instead of “second”.
Page 35: bottom paragraph, change “Discovery” to “Resolution”
page 49: “John Rickman’s account of Cook’s second voyage likewise” should read “John Rickman’s account of Cook’s third voyage likewise” - “third” instead of “second”.
Page 60, middle paragraph. Combine two sentences: “... Cook is not only separating one set of coordinates from another, he is marking a physical division in the which the open ocean is separated from the specific places ...” - currently, first sentence ends with “another” and the second sentence begins with “He is marking”, which is awkward at best.
Page 141, second full paragraph: “John Rickman’s vision in the third voyage of a global science of humanity” - “third” instead of “second”.
page 155, middle of the second paragraph: “When describing their stay on the island of Middleburgh during the third voyage, Rickman notes” - adding “during the third voyage”
page 155, bottom of second paragraph delete “On the third voyage,” in front of William Ellis notes....”
Changes to the Index
Discovery, delete page 35
Resolution, add page 35 and 74
