FreeMat

For MATH 311 (Introduction to Linear Algebra; Spring 2009) we will be using FreeMat (version 3.6) a free clone of MATLAB. The syntax for FreeMat is almost exactly the same as MATLAB's so the worksheets and toolbox available at our textbook's web site will work (with minor modifications) if one adds some missing functionality to FreeMat. The textbook is Lay's Linear Algebra and its Applications, Third Edition Update. My students received the minor changes to Lay's toolbox via email. Additionally here is an additional set of free "m-files" to add missing functionality to FreeMat (most are ports of parts of GNU Octave, another MATLAB clone).

There are literally thousands of web pages devoted to MATLAB. Here is a FreeMat Primer.

One of the best resources available to any students studying mathematics at UHH is our Math Tutoring Lab. Click here to go to its web page.

Here is an Archimedes palimpsest article.

Old Classes

Here you will be able to find web pages for classes I have taught in the past. This is a great resource as there are many exams with complete solutions!

bullet Research Wall Smilie

My area of expertise is Graph Theory.
I was trained as a Topological Graph Theorist; but, lately I have been doing Number Theoretical Graph Theory, in particular Super Edge-magic Labelings of Graphs with my good friends
Rikio Ichishima Rikio Smilie and Francesc Antoni Muntaner-Batle Xesc Smilie
(click here for a funny picture of the three of us and here to see a super edge-magic labeling of the Petersen graph). If you want to learn about graph labelings and how our research fits into this area look at the Dynamical Survey of Graph Labelings by Professor Joseph Gallian found in the Electronic Journal of Combinatorics. For a list of the published papers that I have co-authored look at my Curriculum Vitae.
