Alan Ragains is an associate professor at the University of Hawaii– Windward Community College teaching courses in public speaking, interpersonal commmunication, and performance of literature. He is also currently serving as Department Chair for Language Arts.
Alan was born in Peoria, Illinois. His undergraduate degree was from Illinois State University in Normal, IL. After graduating, he taught at Limestone Community High School in Bartonville, IL. His graduate degree was earned at Bradley University in Peoria. Shortly after earning his M.A., he began teaching as a lecturer at Bradley. He also worked for his family's business in Peoria, Moser's Shoe Store. During this period, he became active in histroic preservation, working closely with Central Illinois Landmark's Foundation and the Preservation Council of Illinois. He was appointed to the City's Histroic Preservation Board where he also served as Chair.
In 1986, Alan moved to Hawaii. Initially, he was with the Downtown Liberty House as Sales Manager and Store Trainer. He began teaching evenings as a lecturer at Windward CC. When an opening was available for full-time tenure tract in speech/communication in 1989, Alan applied and was hired.
SP 151 Personal and Public Speaking– This basic course offers a variety of speaking situations in oral presentation. Students are required to give four major speeches throughout the semester: demonstrative, informative, persuasive, and impromptu. Communication models provide a speaking vocabulary for the semester. Audience analysis helps the speaker to more accurately convey information to the audience. Organization and development techniques are explored, as well as delivery (using both voice and body) and dealing with anxiety. A nurturing environment guides students through their presentations with positive results. This class is a must for any professional, in any area. Appear more confident and competent. COMUN 145 Interpersonal Communication– Learn the art of communicating one-on-one with others. Undersatnding communication is essential to talking about communication. Selected units cover self-concept, perception, assertiveness, conflict management, and relationship building. There are two presentations during the semester. Students also maintain a journal, applying concepts from the text to their every-day lives. Whether working with one or many, this course will certrainly improve your communication skills.
