Professional Skills

Archives and Preservation

  • Provided reference service at the Hawaiian Mission Children’s Society Library and Archive, a collection of rare books, manuscripts and photographs focused on the missionary period of Hawaii’s history (1820-1863).
  • Processed the papers of Robert Aitken (Zen Buddhist Master), the Aitken Collection, UH Manoa Archives and Manuscripts.
  • Constructed protective enclosures including phase boxes, pamphlet binders and tuxedo boxes; encapsulated oversized items using ultrasonic welder; and rehoused archival photographs in mylar sleeves.
  • Experience in: adhesive removal with heated micro-spatula and methyl cellulose; dry cleaning with eraser dust, erasers, and smoke sponge; wet cleaning with foam brushes; humidification; and flattening press.
  • Cleaned ½” open reel and ¾” Umatic videotape from the 1970s and transferred them to digital format.
  • Digitally restored and repaired archival video of The Eternal Frame using SGI/Discreet Logic Smoke and authored Saving the Frame: Methods and Ethical Considerations in Video Art Preservation for Archives, a research report based on this project.

Video Librarianship

  • Catalogued and maintained the videotape library of the Center for Asian American Media (formerly NAATA), the world's largest collection of Asian Pacific American videos for educational distribution.
  • Supervised intake of new master videotapes and coordinated dubbing of hundreds of viewing copies each month.

Digital Library Project Management

  • Created a proposal for a Digitizing Program and built a Digital Collection Prototype using Greenstone for the Hawaiian Mission Children’s Society Archives.
  • Coordinated the UH Manoa LIS Memories Project, an ongoing archives project to create a digital collection about the 30-year history of the UH Manoa LIS Program.
  • Assisted in planning the 2006 Greenstone Digital Collection Workshop and Conference at UH Manoa.
  • Coordinated venue, travel, accommodation, volunteer and catering logistics for the 2005 PNC/PRDLA/ECAI Annual Digital Library Conference.

Digital Collections Research and Technical Support

  • Part of a student / faculty collaborative research project studying local digital collections (Hawaii Sugar Plantations Archives and the Ho'olaupa'i Hawaiian Language Newspapers) to identify best practices, requirements, and solutions including adequate supporting software.
  • Helped create a syllabus and reading list for LIS course Systems Analysis for Information Management (Focus on creating Digital Libraries).
  • Digitized photographs, newspapers, pamphlets, slides and microfilm using flatbed and microfilm scanners. Scanned fragile bound materials using CopiBook overhead scanner.
  • Assigned Dublin Core metadata to digital records using Greenstone and Streetprint Engine.
  • Projects include: Nippu Jiji Newspaper Photo Archive, Social Movements Pamphlet Collection, UH Manoa Institutional Repository.

Video Engineering

  • As Assistant Video Editor, prepared programs for broadcast on National PBS in digital linear online edit suite.  Created subtitles and credits. Performed PBS technical evaluations and ensured programs met NTSC broadcast standards.
  • As Video Systems Integrator, maintained mid-sized master control room that contained digital and analog videotape recorders and audio equipment. Integrated video systems with production and edit suites and ensured signal flow met video engineering standards.
  • Equipment/Software: Abekas digital switcher, Accom Axial 2010 edit controller, Chyron Maxine, Abekas Texus, Chyron Duet character generators, Digital Betacam, DVCam, Betacam SP, Hi8, SVHS, 1” videotape recorders; audio mixers; time base correctors; waveform/vectorscopes.

Closed Captioning

  • Certified Captioner for the National Association for the Deaf (NAD) and the U.S. Department of Education’s Captioned Media Program.
  • Senior caption operator for broadcast programs, including national PBS television series.
  • Set up and maintained captioning computer systems and equipment, including home system for remote file transfer.
  • Trained and supervised freelance captioners and support technicians.
  • Panelist, 2000 Western States Arts Federation Conference From Insight to Innovation: Art and Accessibility in the West, lecturing on the Technology of Closed Captioning.
  • Equipment/Software used: Cheetah Captivator, CPC CaptionMaker, analog and digital encoders (Link and Ultech ITV).
  • Projects include: PBS television series Independent Lens, and Uncommon Knowledge; Oscar-nominated documentary The Weather Underground.
