Hawaii Skills Community
The CTE Center currently offers three resources/services geared towards improving the quality of Hawaii’s workforce. We want a more competent, higher skilled community of people – both those incumbent workers already in the workforce or the students who will eventually enter the workforce. Employers and/or educators can benefit from the job profiling, KeyTrain, and Career Skills we offer.
Job Profiling
Job profiling refers to the process of examining and gathering information relating to the specific tasks, tools, skills, abilities, or knowledge of a particular job. Job profiling can serve many useful purposes for both educators and employers. And best of all, job profiling is FREE…the only cost is the time and effort required. For educators, job profiling can help them develop or ensure curriculum or activities connect to real-world work situations. For businesses, job profiling can help them create more accurate job descriptions and/or provide the training that will be most effective towards positive outcomes.
KeyTrain
KeyTrain is an online system geared towards foundational workplace skills. Rather than target job-specific skills, KeyTrain targets general skills essential to most workers: These skills include the following:
- Reading for Information
- Applied Mathematics
- Locating Information
- Applied Technology
- Writing
- Business Writing
- Listening
- Observation
- Teamwork
- Beginning Skills
The KeyTrain system includes a mini-assessment, goal-setting towards certain levels for specified jobs, and remediation activities to bring the learner up to the goal set. The activities are all online, are self-paced, and can include any one or all of the foundational skill areas. The cost is currently $15 per student, per year.
Career Skills
The Career Skills online resource is geared specifically for students who have limited or no work experience. Perfect for those ready for their first internship or first job, Career Skills helps students to improve their work habits and employability, to achieve success in the workplace. The curriculum includes hundreds of lessons in the following categories:
- The Job Search
- Work Habits
- Communication Skills
- Workplace Effectiveness
- Business Etiquette
The Career Skills lessons are entirely online. At the end of each lesson, students may print out a certificate of achievement. The Career Skills tool is sponsored by the CTE Center.
