Introduction. For understanding the social and political contexts of Chinese residents in Japan, read two studies by Daojiong Zha (Renmin University of China, formerly with International University of Japan). See Zha's paper "Chinese Migrants in Niigata: A Research Update" and his "Chinese Migrant Workers in Japan: Policies, Institutions, and Civil Society."

Also, consult the abstract of Tien-shi Chen's paper "To Be or Not to Be Japanese: Legal Treatment of Overseas Chinese in Japan" (Annual Meeting, The Association for Asian Studies, 2000). For an anecdotal journalistic report on anti-Chinese discrimination in Japan in the twenty-first century, see Tomoko Otake, "Chinese here feel sting of prejudice," The Japan Times, online edition, 5 May 2004.

STUDENT PERSPECTIVE
on ALA! :

"Overseas Chinese are keeping their identity as Chinese with origins in China but also as residents of Japan. One of the best ways of balancing between two kinds of identity is to keep connections with mainland China and, at the same time, establishing communities of Chinese in Japan where they do not have to abandon Chinese ways of living and are able to show native Japanese who they are.

"For Japanese like myself, the best thing about this website is that it shows Japanese about the Overseas Chinese living among us. It is even possible to use the websites message boards and chat rooms to communicate with them. A significant amount of information on this website is supplied by its users — individuals and companies — not by its editor.....Websites like this one also show that suppposedly homogeneous Japan has found it necessary to recognize "different ethnicities" within the country, and Overseas Chinese are a good example of an ethnic group struggling to maintain connections with two homelands in two countries"
— Yuki Amagai, student, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, Asian Studies 320c, Spring 2005.

STUDENT PERSPECTIVE
on Zainichi Chuguokujin:

"Since the mid-1980s, mass communications media in Japan have been supporting the transfer of culture from China to Japan in a very active way.....This website can encourage Overseas Chinese to connect with others in different Chinese diaspora communities and to exchange information for being successful in all aspects of their lives in Japan. The website also conducts online surveys on topics relevant to the daily lives of Overseas Chinese in Japan. This website's statistics can help newer Chinese immigrants learn more about problems they are facing, for example, how to get education for their children. Finally, the large amount of information here is well-organized under helpful categories. Most information is selected by the editor — not submitted by users of the website"
— Yuki Amagai, student, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, Asian Studies 320c, Spring 2005.
