UH Wahine Volleyball Statistics and

Records

The UH wahine volleyball team has become a major force ever since head coach Dave Shoji stepped on board.  He along with Charlie Wade have recruited some of the best players in the nation and internationally as well.   Players such as Angelica Ljungquist, Veronica Lima and Heather Bown have proved to be indespensible to the UH volleyball program.  Needless to say, the Rainbow Wahine volleyball statistics are very impressive and not only have the players broken some records but the fans have broken some records as well!

The Fans

The support for the University of Hawaii volleyball team has reached unprecedented heights the past few seasons with the opening of the Stan Sherrif Center, formerly the Special Events Arena. Last year the total spectators for the season was 129,622, by far the most spectators in the nation. The second closest was Wisconsin with 62,227. The UH players and coaches all agree that the Hawaii fans are the best in the nation. In volleyball they are like the seventh member on the court.

The Stan Sherrif Center

The Stan Sherrif Center was named after the man who lobbied so hard for it. He was a former UH athletic's director who held the post from 1983 to 1993. The center was originally only approved to have 4,000 seats but Stan Sherrif said that it would not be enough for a Division 1 school. The arena was given approval and the facility has had overwhelming success. An NBA-style scoreboard looms above and the arena seats 10,300 people but can actually seat 12,000 depending on the floor configuration. The floor bleachers can be folded in so that there is enough room for two full size practice courts. The arena has hosted prestigious events such as the 1998 Miss Universe Pageant and the 1998 NCAA Division 1 Men's Volleyball Championships. It will also host the 1998 NCAA Division 1 Women's Volleyball Championships this month.

A second phase of the arena houses 4 home and 3 visitor locker rooms as well as an officials locker room, a player lounge, a training room, an equipment and laundry room, 2 hospitality room, a press room, an interview room, three classrooms and a teaching lab. Also included is the Alexander C. Waterhouse Physiology Research and Training Facility. This facility is 10,000 square feet and includes a weight-training and conditioning center to help athletes improve their performance. There is also a first aid station, a security office a kitchen and many concession stands. The Rainbowtique is also housed here where you can purchase souvenirs and other products.
