which influenced my imagination much more than the author could have ever suspected!)

Presently, I'm an Assistant Professor of Communication at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Education: PhD in Political Science (1993), MA in Communication (1986) & Graduate Certificate in Pacific Islands Studies (1986) from UHM. BA in Communication Arts (1982), with a major in TV production & minor in sociology, from George Fox College in Newberg, Oregon.
Peace Corps volunteer in Fiji (1982-84) at the University of the South Pacific (slow link).
Co-founder of the SeaMOO project at UHM with its WWW entrance via SeaMOO's World.
Also, architect and supervisor of the
Hawai'i website (maintained by C. Kanemura).
Research Interests: political economy of telecommunications & development; communication policy & planning; video & multimedia production; social impact of information technologies in the Asia-Pacific region; alternative futures; info. tech's role in & impact on indigenous societies.

Hawaii Research Center for Futures Studies (HRCFS)
- HRCFS was created by the Hawaii State Legislature in 1971. Placed within the Social Science Research Institute at the University of Hawaii, it serves as a research arm for public agencies that require assistance in locating future-oriented information or experts. The Center encourages and promotes the research, development and use of futures studies theories, methods and designs and maintains a database of studies, individuals, and groups concerned with futures in Hawaii, the U.S. and globally.
Pacific Telecommunications Council
- The Pacific Telecommunications Council (PTC) occupies a unique place in the dynamic, rapidly-growing world of Pacific hemisphere and global communications. Founded in 1980, PTC organizes a major annual conference, regional seminars, an important quarterly journal, a variety of other publications, research activites, and special issue-specific task groups.

4th World Documentation Project: Oceania
- Documents from Melanesia, Polynesia and Micronesia, including essays, position papers, resolutions, treaties, UN documents, speeches and declarations. This service is maintained by The Center for World Indigenous Studies, an independent, non-profit research and education organization dedicated to wider understanding and appreciation of indigenous peoples.
Native American Resources on the Internet
- An exhaustive listing of WWW & other Internet links to resources for and about Native Americans. Also, check out the Native Web Home Page and the accompanying Native Events Calandar for a schedule of Pow-Wows and other events. Native American Public Telecommunications, Inc. is also an excellent source of educational and public telecommunications programs and services supporting tribal sovereignty.
Electronic Frountier Foundation
- A non-profit civil liberties public interest organization working to protect freedom of expression, privacy, and access to online resources and information.
The Alliance for Public Technology (APT)
- A Washington, DC based nonprofit, coalition of public interest groups and individuals whose goal is to foster broad access to affordable, usable information and communication services and technology.
Citizens Internet Empowerment Coalition(CIEC)
- A broad group of Internet users, library groups, publishers, online service providers, and civil liberties groups fighting for the future of the First Amendment and the future of free expression in the Information age.
