[Summer Session 2000 Watermark] [Computer Lab Assignments]

LAB Overview

Most Thursdays & Fridays [with an occasional Wednesday session] class will meet in the College of Social Science's Macintosh Lab (SSB 342) to participate in "hands-on" exercises with various multimedia hardware and software. Each session will have an associated webpage providing instruction on the day's activities [see schedule below]. Typically, lab assignments are due at the end of lab. During lab, students are encouraged to "share" their ideas and expertise with each other so that everyone can get through the assigned tasks on time and with minimal frustration. Emphasis will be placed on gaining a broad literacy (rather than mastery) in multimedia while learning to apply creative and critical thinking skills to exploring the potential of interactive multimedia in today's society.

There will be no make-up for missed lab exercises
nor credit given for assignments turned in late!

"Golden Rules" of the Mac Lab
  1. THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE MAC LAB IS to facilitate the computer-based learning needs of students currently en-rolled in Multimedia, Journalism &/or other Social Science courses at UHM.

  2. NO FOOD OR DRINKS in the lab or near the computers.

  3. DO NOT PLACE ITEMS ON THE COMPUTERS.

  4. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN COMPUTER FILES. Bring the necessary materials to back-up your computer files at the end of each lab session and DO NOT DELETE OTHER PEOPLE'S FILES - PERIOD!

  5. THE MAC LAB IS NOT A PLACE TO PLAY Internet games, engage in Internet Chat, read/send personal email, nor "rip" MP3 files (especially during class lab time).

  6. DO NOT INSTALL PROGRAMS OR ATTEMPT TO COPY PROGRAMS on to or from the lab computers. Not only would you likely cause the computer to experience operational conflicts and/or possible crashes, but it may be, in all likelihood, ILLEGAL!

  7. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO "FIX" ANY MAC LAB HARDWARE/SOFTWARE. Alert the Lab Assistant to any problems you may be having and let them make the determination of how best to handle "fixing" the problem.

  8. INDIVIDUAL(S) MAY BE DENIED USE OF THE MAC LAB FACILITIES IF, they misuse or abuse any equipment, engage in conduct which is disturbing to others, or have repeatedly contravened any of the lab rules.

LAB Topics to be covered

We will endeavor to adhere to the following schedule but reserve the right to be flexible! All modifications will be distributed in advance via email.

LAB 1 -- Intro to the Mac Lab & Multimedia Platforms

Students will be introduced to the Macintosh Interface and learn how to connect to the Course Web Server and Printers in the Mac Lab. Students will then compare and contrast the print edition of a local newspaper with its Web counterpart.

LAB 2 -- Exploring Multimedia: Presentation Software

Following a brief orientation to PowerPoint, students will then use the program to create an "aesthetically pleasing" electronic version of their résumé. When completed, students will then convert their electronic résumé into a QuickTime movie and upload it to their home directory.

LAB 3 -- "Thinking" Multimedia: Inspiration Demo

Students will use a demo version of Inspiration, a visualization tool that helps to organize ideas. In this exercise, students will use Inspiration to brainstorm and mind map ideas for a possible multimedia project.

LAB 4 -- Exploring HTML: Introducing Dreamweaver

The purpose of this exercise is threefold: first, to introduce students to "simple" HTML document creation; second, to familarize students with Macromedia's Dreamweaver, a visually-oriented professional website authoring program; and finally, walk students through the processes of "publishing" their page(s) to the World Wide Web [WWW or Web] so others can view them.

LAB 5 -- Beyond Basic Dreamweaver

This exercise is intended to build upon the previous Dreamweaver introduction by walking students through the process of building a "site," as well as teach students how to import and reformat text, how to work with images, create hyperlinks, image maps and how to make simple rollovers.

LAB 6 -- Using Scanners & Digital Cameras

Students will use Ofoto or ScanWizard [whichever is available in the lab!] to scan photographs or other COPYRIGHT FREE graphic images. Likewise, students will also use a digital camera to take a photo of themselves and download the image to their computer workstation. Students will then crop their scanned images &/or their digital photographs to a "managable" size using PhotoShop, and save them as GIF files for possible inclusion on their Web page(s).

LAB 7 -- Basic Adobe PhotoShop I

Students will be introduced to the various tools available in PhotoShop and learn how they are used by graphic designers. Students will also complete a simple PhotoShop image editing project.

LAB 8 -- Basic Adobe PhotoShop II

Students will learn more about working with PhotoShop Layers, the Cloning tool and the Text tool. Students will also be given another image editing project they should complete in class.

LAB 9 -- Manipulating Digital Audio

Using a commercial sound editing program, students will fix a jumbled up sound bite and then record their own greeting for possible posting on their "bio.html" or other web page(s).

LAB 10 -- Basic GIF Animation

In this exercise students will build an animated GIF using GIFBuilder and optionally upload the animated GIF file to their respective websites.

LAB 11 -- Introduction to Adobe Premiere

In this exercise students will be given a chance to explore the basics of desktop digital video by completing a tutorial exercise using Adobe Premiere .

LAB 12 -- Supervised Group Project Session

During this lab session students will spend their time working on their projects. Also, resource lists are provided for students to explore issues concerning online copyright and fair use, web design and access to web tools.

LAB 13 -- ** BETA TEST PROJECT! **

Students "show-off" their semester's efforts for everyone to see, appreciate and comment upon!

EXTRA CREDIT!- A Web Page of Your Own[New!]

In this optional exercise, students will build an "About Me!" Web Page [on their own time!] to include not only a little information about themselves, but to also "showcase" some of the multimedia files they have created in other lab exercises. Again, this is for extra credit and NOT a required lab assignment. Finished product is due before 12:00 midnight on the last day of class [30 June 2000].
