An outrigger acts as a counter-poise or balance, rigged out from the side of the canoe. A number of spars, usually 2 but up to as many as 10 depending on the canoe's origin and purpose, are lashed across and to the canoe gunwales, extending outwards and ending with the attachment of a flotation device. note: In the UH library system, these subject headings are also divided geographically, so you can search for outrigger canoes in specific places.
If you are interested in learning about long-range navigation technqiues, like those used on Hoku'lea, watch the "Explorers" presentation at the Bishop Museum's planetarium. For more information on the Bishop Museum, visit their website at: <http://www.bishopmuseum.org>.
Note that the Hoku'lea is not an outrigger canoe, it is a double-hulled canoe. For more information on the Hoku'lea, visit the Polynesian Voyaging Society. ![]() |
