ORANGE COUNTY WATER DISTRICT DEDICATES ADVANCED WELLHEAD TREATMENT

Fountain Valley, CA - A new wellhead treatment project operating in Tustin, California will restore tainted water to drinking water standards in three previously closed wells. The wells had been abandoned due to excessive levels of nitrate and TDS, and have the capacity to produce an additional 3,400 acre-feet of water per year for the city.

"The project will increase the reliability of Tustin's water supply while lowering costs," said OCWD Board President Wes Bannister (at left with the Mayor of Tustin, Jeff Thomas.) "Not only will the desalter project help the city meet a growing demand for domestic water, but it will curtail the spread of contamination in the Tustin area."

The Reverse Osmosis system reduces the dissolved salts and nitrate from 1,500 mg/l to 600 mg/l and 94 mg/l to 40 mg/l respectively. The replenished water is then decarbonated and disinfected before being pumped into the city's drinking water system.

In early years, when agriculture dominated the county, pesticides and fertilizers affected areas of Orange County's local water supply as salts and nitrates leached into the groundwater basin. Tustin's limited extraction capacity was not only costly, it also left the city at risk during times of drought or emergency water shortage.

The 17th Street Desalter is a cooperative project of the City of Tustin and the Orange County Water District with assistance from the Municipal Water District of Orange County, Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, and the State Department of Water Resources. A ceremony dedicating the project was held at the treatment plant on July 22, 1997 where a commemorative plaque was presented to the Tustin City Council for their support of the project.
