(the following description of the treatment process is from http://www.cityftmyers.com/PublicWorks/WaterPlant/waterplant.htm)

Plant Purpose

The decision to build the membrane softening water plant was made because the existing 55 year old plant was not able to meet compliance levels. Reducing the formation of trihalomethanes was a major factor in the decision to use the membrane process, along with cost effectiveness.

The plant was designed for a total capacity of 20 MGD. The plant currently has 3 trains which will produce water in 4 MGD increments.

The plant began producing water 24 hours per day in December 1992.

Raw Water Source

River Pumps

Located approximately 13 miles from the plant on the Caloosahatchee River on the fresh water side of the Franklin Locks. The water is pumped through a 30 inch diameter raw water main to the wellfield, where it is distributed throughout the wellfield through approximately 3 miles of shallow canals to recharge the surface aquifer.

WITHDRAWAL PERMIT:

3.714 BG (10.18 MGD) annually, 17.80 MGD daily maximum

OPERATION CONTROL:

Three Peerless pumps with 200 Hp US Motors each provide 7000 gpm @ 1180 rpm. Pumps can only be operated locally. Each pump has its own on/off switch and is controlled by a 24-hour per day timer. Rotation of pumps and time setting is done on Mondays, during a bi-weekly inspection.
