What are Steroids? Anabolic-androgenic steroids is most commonly known as “steroids.” They are a synthetic derivative of the male sex hormone testosterone. Testosterone has an anabolic and androgenic effect on the body. Anabolic means “to build” and androgenic means “to become masculine.”
How are Steroids Used? Steroids come in different shapes, forms, sizes, and colors. They are water-soluble and can be either injected, swallowed, and most recently, worn on the skin. Taking steroids by injection is the most common route of administration. Liquid forms of steroids are either packaged in glass vials or glass bottles and require a syringe to extract the drug. It is now possible to get the drug into the body by wearing a small patch on the skin. It works like the patches that cigarette smokers use to quit smoking.
What are the Physical Effects? Steroids promote the growth of skeletal muscles and create anabolic affects on the body. Steroids can cause acne, internal bleeding, cysts liver tumors, and shrinkage of the genitals. These are just some of the affects that steroids have on the body.
What are the Personality Effects? A person can have increased aggression and irritability. A person can become short tempered, even to their most loved ones. The scary thing is that there is a possibility that a person on steroids could kill someone in aggression.
Why People Use Steroids? The main reason why people use steroids is to improve their performance in bodybuilding or other sports which involves increased muscle mass, strength and speed. It’s the whole “bigger, faster, stronger” concept.
How to Avoid Steroids? Try to be mentally tough. A person can achieve any physical goals by putting their mind and heart into it. If you dedicate yourself to weight training and eating right, then you will achieve your goals without the use of steroids.
