About The Author

Abe Arkoff is emeritus professor of psychology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa where he continues to teach in its Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Before his retirement, his students included the youngest and oldest students on campus - those in a freshman seminar program which he directed and those in the Elderhostel program which he brought to the campus and coordinated. He has won a national award for his workshop program and two university awards for excellence in his work.

Abe is a licensed (Hawaii), board-certified (ABPP) clinical psychologist who has practiced in various settings. For ten years he was a volunteer working with terminally-ill persons and their families. His interests include self-fulfillment and personal growth, and his books in this area include Adjustment and Mental Health, Explorations in Human Behavior, Psychology and Personal Growth, Explorations in Personal Growth, The Illuminated Life, The Illuminated Life: Your Lifebook, and The Illuminated Life: Your Third Age Lifebook.

Abe developed The Illuminated Life® program and has, since 1985, led program-related courses and workshops in this program with young, middle-aged, and older adults. He is currently training others as workshop leaders, and he is working to establish networks of persons who are interested in rethinking their lives, working to make more of them, and sharing their work with others. A program of research has begun concerning the workshop's impact on the psychological well-being of the participants.

To help further his work, Abe has established The Illuminated Life Foundation, an educational, nonprofit, tax-exempt organization. Inquiries concerning support for the foundation or the dissemination of the workshop program can be directed to Abe at his email address (arkoff@hawaii.edu).
