Course Description and Objectives
Korean 202 is a second part of intermediate Korean and a
continuation of the intermediate Korean 1 or Korean 201. The
objective of this course is to equip students with skills in
speaking, writing, listening, and reading at the intermediate
level in Korean. The four skills will be equally emphasized
throughout this section. The instructor will use Korean as
much as possible, and the use of English will be minimal.
Toward the end of the semester, students are expected to be
able to orally communicate as well as read and write in Korean
on topics that are based on their personal experiences with
accuracy and fluency. The topics include Korean Holidays,
birthdays, barbershops and beauty salons, recreation and
hobbies, hospitals and drugstores, marriage, cultural
differences, and majors and jobs. Also, the instructor will
help students to build a solid foundation for further and
independent study in Korean. Students will learn useful facts
about Korean history, culture and daily life.

depending on the performances of the class. Students will be

** Extra credit works consist of listening exercises and
reading exercises on the web. Credits for the extra activities
will be added to the total homework credits. Also, occasional
extra activities outside the class will be assigned throughout
the semester.
NOTE:
- Because of the cumulative nature of any language learning,
attendance is an essential part in this course. Thus,
attendance check will be strictly enforced. If a student is
absent 5 times and more without any written proof of
inevitable circumstances, her/his grade will be dropped one
full letter grade (A→B), and two full grades down after 10
unexcused absences (A→C). Tardiness of more than 20 minutes
will be counted as an unexcused absence, unless provided by
official proof. Participation will be graded based on
participation in class activities.
- Students will have a skit presentation at the 14th week of
the semester. Specific information will be announced later.
- Assignments are due on the date notified. Late assignments
will be graded, but with less score of 50%. 4 is the full
credit for one homework. Excellent work will get an extra
credit.
- There are daily grammar and vocabulary quizzes at the start
of a class from the second week. The quiz starts at 09:30
sharp. DON’T BE LATE!
- There will be four oral tests. Paired or grouped students
will make a dialogue and perform at a class for the tests 1, 2
and 3. Model conversation will be offered for the first two
tests. Students should create a dialogue for the third test.
The last test will be an interview with the instructor.
- There will be NO MAKEUP quizzes, oral tests or exams unless
provided with an official proof for a justifiable reason of
absence. Note: Any kind of cheating on exams, quizzes, and
other assignments will be met by severe punishments, including
(1) expulsion from the course with a failing grade; and (2) a
report to University of Hawaii at Manoa officials. Appeals may
be made through appropriate channels.
