 Course Objectives

Korean 201 is a continuation of the beginning Korean (Korean 101, 102). The objective of this course is to equip students with skills in reading, listening, writing and speaking at the low-intermediate level in Korean. The four skills will be equally emphasized throughout this section. The instructor will help students to build a solid foundation for further and independent study in Korean.

Toward the end of the semester, students are expected to be able to orally communicate as well as read and write in Korean on topics that are based on their personal experiences such as weather, shopping, travel, sending mails, etc. Also, students will learn useful facts about Korean culture and daily life.

The instructor will use Korean as much as possible, and the use of English will be minimal.

Descriptions

Because of the cumulative nature of any language learning, attendance is an essential part in this course. Thus, attendance check will be strictly enforced. If a student is absent 5 times and more without any written proof of inevitable circumstances, her/his grade will be dropped one full letter grade (A→B), and two full grades down after 10 unexcused absences (A→C). Also, tardiness of more than 20 minutes will be counted as an unexcused absence, unless provided by official proof.

Assignments are due on the next class, unless a specific date is notified: assignments will be given on Fridays and Tuesdays. Late assignments will be graded, but 50% after one day. No credit will be given after three days. Students can get 4 points for each assignment. Students may redo their assignment when they receive 2 and below. 3 will be given for a revised assignment.

There will be 9-10 weekly quizzes every Friday at the start of a class, otherwise announced. The weekly quizzes will cover the lesson studied that week.

There are daily vocabulary quizzes at the start of a class from the second week. The quiz starts at 09:30 sharp. DON’T BE LATE!

Written test: There will be two written tests. The test items will be based on quizzes and assignments, covering grammar & vocabulary, listening, and writing.

Oral test: There will be two oral tests. During the 7th week, paired students will make a dialogue and perform at a class. Model conversation will be offered. During the 15th and 16th weeks, there is a one-to-one interview with the instructor based on oral exercises and oral exchanges in class.

There will be no makeup quizzes, oral test or exams unless provided with an official proof for a justifiable reason of absence. (Note: Any kind of cheating on exams, quizzes, and other assignments will be met by severe punishments, including (1) expulsion from the course with a failing grade; and (2) a report to University of Hawaii at Manoa officials. Appeals may be made through appropriate channels.)
