archaeology home page.
New Caledonia
- Hienghene is as
far as you can travel on the paved road on the mainland (Grande Terre) of
New Caledonia.
- This part of
the north-east coast of the Grande Terre is a great place to study
coastal morphology, but watch out for stingrays if you venture into the
water here.
- I like the mangrove areas in
certain parts of the Grande Terre. These places are homes to a diversity
of plant and animal life.
- In this cliff
face, you can see Pandanus growing right on the rocks! In this area,
the Pandanus nuts are large enough to be considered worthwhile food during
times of starvation. This mode of eating is not currently practiced
anywhere in New Caledonia.
- I enjoy hiking in the upper
elevations on the Grande Terre, where some very nice prehistoric sites
can be found.
- Here's a picture of the hut where I lived on
Muli islet (part of Ouvea) for the duration of my field work there in
1998.
- I think you will like the view from atop of
Faiava islet, looking across to Muli and Lekini. The bridge you see
here is the only bridge on Ouvea. In fact, it's the only bridge in all of
the Loyalty Islands right now.
- It took a crew of several people to exacavate in this rockshelter,
Site LUV029.
- This is my favorite photograph. It's the sunset as viewed from
outside of my hut on Muli.
- At low tide, you can walk across the channel to the Lekini cliffs.
- The beach at
Muli faces a beautiful and bountiful lagoon.
