Thoughts on the university and software.

This will soon be replaced by a re-written version of my "GIS and the Education-Industrial Complex" essay.

The main point is that the university's core function is better served by a commitment to Free and Open-Source Software than by reliance on commercial and proprietary software.

Further, the state's interests in supporting public education are also better served by FOSS.

Arguements based on learning objectives and out-comes as well as on costs of software are advanced.
