Agribusiness: Students receive a strong background in the business aspect of agriculture, a skill in great demand. Agribusiness graduatescan expect promising careers in agricultural finance, management andmarketing. Agroecology and Environmental Quality: This program is designed for students interested in sustaining agrarian and surrounding ecosystems through more efficient management of land, biota, and water. Low-input alternative farming methods that emphasize nutrient recycling and "environmentally friendly" production practices are given special consideration. Students who complete this curriculum can anticipate career opportunities in environmental regulatory agencies, conservation, farm service agencies, farm management, commercial laboratories, and graduate studies. Animal Science: Students receive practical hand-on experience with livestock as well as excellent training in animal science, communications and science. The Pre-Veternary Option is designed for students interested in graduate studies in Veterinary Medicine or Animal Science. This curriculum meets the entrance requirements for many Veterinary Colleges and graduate animal science programs. The Production Option prepares students for careers in the livestock industry. Aquaculture: Students receive skills needed by the growing aqualcuture industry in Hawai'i and throughout the world. The program takes advantage of warm freshwater, warm seawater, and coldseawater aquaculture found on the Big Island. Graduates often start their own operations or take positions as aquaculture bilologists, technicians, or constultants. Crop Protection: Students receive a strong background in entomology, horticulture, plant pathology, weed science and biology so they can manage a wide variety of problems which can affect plant production. Graduates take positions in plant pest control, crop production and environmental protection. General Agriculture: The program offers a well-rounded eduction in the basic and applied sciences of modern agriculture. Graduates have the opportunity to pursue careers in various areas of agriculture and agribusiness or work toward advanced degrees. Tropical Horticulture: This curriculum emphasizes the production of tropical crops. Students learn basic horticultural practices such as grafting, prunning, pest management, and cultivating tropical crops as well as advanced techniques such plant tissue culture and hormonal manipulation of plants.
